Gas prices up for 5th week

---- — The steady climb in gas prices continued last week. Although the increases were small, the price of motor fuel in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire rose for the fifth straight week, according to figures compiled by the auto club AAA.

The overall national average rose for the sixth consecutive period last week, AAA found.

The Massachusetts state-wide average for self-service regular gas inched 0.8 cents higher during the seven-day span, reaching $3.777 on Wednesday compared to $3.769 the prior week. Wednesday’s Bay State figure was 6.1 cents higher than the $3.716 state average reported by AAA on the same day of 2012.

New Hampshire drivers saw prices tick 1.3 pennies higher. On Wednesday the auto club reported a state-wide average of $3.743 for self-service regular, up from $3.730 one week earlier. On the same day last year, AAA put the Granite State average at $3.669, or 7.4 cents lower than Wednesday’s level.

The U.S. national average for self-service regular increased to $3.786 on Wednesday, a 2.0-cent rise from the prior Wednesday’s $3.766, AAA reported. On the same day of 2012, the coast-to-coast average of $3.716 was 7.0 cents lower than Wednesday’s figure.
