Video shows thief making off with entire cash register

LAWRENCE, Mass. — When a thief couldn't convince a liquor store clerk to open the cash drawer on her register so he could take money, he pulled the entire register off the counter and ran away.

Surveillance video shows a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a pink fedora walk into the Super Liquors store Thursday night in this suburb north of Boston. He pulled the sleeves of his sweatshirt over his hands and reached around the counter, apparently trying to open the register for himself.

When the clerk walks up, he tells her to open it, but she initially sounds confused; police noted that due to a language barrier, she may not have understood the demand. After a few more seconds of arguing, the man says, "Alright," and grabs the entire register off the counter.

A witness riding his bike in the area told police he saw the suspect run around a corner carrying the register. He dropped it at one point, but quickly picked it up and kept running. Police said he may have jumped into a waiting car.

The robber was not believed to have a weapon. Police were still looking for him and the cash register as of Tuesday.
