Women's basketball coach arrested in hit-and-run

ADA, Okla. — The women's basketball coach at East Central University turned himself in Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pedestrian.

Kent Wayne Franz, 50, was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident causing great bodily harm.

Two passersby called 911 just before 10 p.m. Monday and said there was an unconscious woman lying beside the road, and a dead dog in the middle of the road.

Emergency personnel arrived and took 49-year-old Angela Wilburn the hospital. Ada Police Officer Kathy Unbewust said Wilburn suffered a shattered pelvis, right ankle fracture, vertebrae fracture, internal injuries, a blood clot in the brain and a heart attack.

The University of Oklahoma Medical Center had Wilburn listed in serious condition.

According to a police report, Franz told investigators he was driving to a restaurant when he hit something, but when he turned around, he didn’t see anything. Franz said he pulled over to look at the damage to his vehicle and saw an ambulance pass.

"Mr. Franz stated he panicked, left the scene, went home and told his wife what happened," the report said.

Franz bonded out of jail late Tuesday.

Franz has coached the ECU Lady Tigers basketball team for 21 years. The team finished 19-9 in the 2012-2013 season, according to the university's website.
