Refuge offers 1-week photo camp for teens

NEWBURYPORT — Parker River National Wildlife Refuge will offer a digital nature photography day camp for high school-age youth the week of July 16 - 20, 2012 at the refuge.

Provided with a loaner digital single lens reflex camera, each camp participant will spend the week learning and practicing the fundamentals of photographic exposure and composition.

Each participant will be required to provide and use their own laptop computer (either Windows or Mac). By week's end each camper will have assembled a portfolio of their favorite images — one of which will be selected for printing and framing as part of a public display in the refuge visitor center.

Applicants to the day camp must be entering grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 next fall (or be of equivalent age, if home-schooled). Using a lottery process, a total of 10t youths will be selected to participate. Tuition for the camp is $75.

Those interested can download a photo camp application form at the refuge web site or by sending an email to matt_poole@fws.gov. Application deadline is Wednesday, June 6th.

YMCA offers special summer rates

Senior and Young Adult Summer memberships — $70 for 3 months. (Young Adult memberships began on May 1.) Adult Summer memberships — $75 for 3 months.

Merrimack Valley YMCA Summer memberships will be available June 1 through Aug. 31. There is no joiner fee for this special summer promotion and is only available for new Merrimack Valley YMCA members. Membership at the Y allows people use of the three swimming pools (Two in Andover and one in Lawrence); use of basketball courts and gymnasiums, over 50 group exercise classes each week, family nights, and more.

Free workshops on managing diabetes

BOXFORD — The Boxford Council on Aging, 4 Middleton Road, is offering a free six-week workshop June 12 to July 17 on diabetes management. For more information or to register call Pam at 978-887-3591. The workshop is a spin-off of the My Life My Health program.

MTEL prep course offered at NECC

Aspiring teachers planning on taking the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) held in July, can enroll in a 10-hour, four-week prep course offered beginning on June 9 through Northern Essex Community College's Workforce Development and Community Education Department at the Riverwalk, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence.

It will be held Saturdays June 9 through June 30 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The cost is $199, including all materials.
