The Massachusetts Military Academy (MMA) Alumni Association, seeks graduates of the MMA Officer Candidate School (OCS) graduates from all classes and all years. The academy will host a formal banquet and ball on Oct. 5, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Massachusetts Military Academy — the Officer Candidate School of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, 1913-2013. Quota International of Lawrence, held a reception at the Roma Restaurant in Haverhill in honor of the club’s scholarship recipients. Those in attendance included Jean Markert of Methuen, scholarship committee member; Alani Simmons, high school scholarship award recipient and her mother, Maureen Simmons, both of Methuen; Joanne Lovecchio of Lawrence, scholarship committee member; and Jason Ernest, Northern Essex Community College Deaf Studies scholarship award recipient, and his father, Bob Ernest of Ashland.

Lawrence Ladies Lodge No. 2026, OSIA, held its annual scholarship reception on May 21. Three local students were honored and presented with $1,500 Josephine A. Rizzo Scholarships: Rhianna Waterman of Haverhill, Nancy Sahdala of Lawrence and Samantha Cullum of Methuen. Waterman, who will attend the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, plans to major in pre-med; Sahdala will attend Bridgewater University and plans to major in accounting; and Cullum, who will attend Northeastern University, plans to major in biology.
Amvets Ladies Auxiliary Post 147 of Haverhill, have returned from their 67th annual State Convention, which was held at the Sturbridge Hotel and Conference Center on Cedar Lake in Sturbridge from June 4-9. Many awards and honors were given. The first award was presented to Auxiliary 147 president, Joanne Payson for signing up the most new members, bringing the auxiliary’s current membership to 103. The auxiliary also received the Alice Cyr Membership Plaque and the Child Welfare Award for Special Needs Children. The Betty Burnell Award was presented to long standing member, Cecile Lessard, for serving the greatest number of hours in a veterans’ hospital. Also elected to state office from Auxiliary Post 147 was Juanita Marshand, N.E.C., and Marion Davis as state recording secretary. The awards were on display at an officers-only meeting on June 25, at Amvets Post 147 in Haverhill.
