Merrimack Valley/Haverhill Out of the Darkness Walk, at Winnekenni Park in Haverhill. Presented by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), proceeds will benefit communities in the Merrimack Valley area. AFSP provides educational programming for high school and college students, teachers and staff to learn the signs of depression and provides support to families who have lost a loved one to suicide. AFSP also works to advocate and educate leaders in Massachusetts to continue funding and support for returning veterans and their families. Penny Sale Fundraiser, in the Chester Multi-Purpose Room, 84 Chester St., Chester. Hosted by the Chester Congregational and Baptist Church. Tickets are $1 for 25 tickets and raffle tickets for larger items are $1 each. Tickets will go on sale at noon and doors will open at 2 p.m. to start putting tickets in the containers for the items attendees wish to take a chance to win. Drawing begins at 7 p.m. Patrons must be present to win. Tickets will be drawn until a winning ticket holder comes forward. Various household, toy and gift items will be available to win along with gift certificates from local businesses. Families welcome. Marching Band Competition, 4 p.m. at North Andover High School, 430 Osgood St. Seventeen high school marching bands will compete. There will also be a performance by the Boston University Marching Band. Concessions will be available. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students. Call 978-681-9915.
