Family of four needs help

Rosa has to tell her story through an interpreter. She does not speak any English, and one can only wonder how much more difficult her struggle is because of the language barrier she faces every day.

Rosa is 28 years old and she has three children. Her story is almost too familiar: her husband left abruptly only a matter of weeks ago and she’s frightened and scared about what will happen next.

Rosa has turned to the Santa Fund to help her family during the holidays.

“She is here because she has no income for surprises for the kids for Christmas and no money to purchase food,” Rosa said through Miguelina Feliz, an officer for the Lawrence Salvation Army. Rosa has two boys and a girl, aged 7, 4 and 2. Her landlord has sent a letter informing her that she must vacate her apartment before Christmas.

When asked about how the Santa Fund has affected her outlook, Feliz asked the question in Spanish to Rosa and then said, “She’s sad but she’s also happy. Now we can help her with the Santa Fund.” Feliz added, “Right now she’s going through a lot, but she’s happy to have help for her kids.”

Feliz added that the Santa Fund is a vital program during the Christmas season. “We need to help the community,” she said.
