Woman injured in I-495 crash in Merrimac

MERRIMAC — An Amesbury woman was taken by helicopter to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston last night after her car rolled over and crashed into the median on Interstate 495 near the Broad Street exit, state police said.

Tammy Cartagena, 33, was conscious when she was placed on the helicopter, which landed on the highway, according to State Police Lt. Daniel Richard. The entire highway was shut down for 10 minutes while rescuers treated her and moved her into the helicopter, Richard said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, he said. The accident was reported at 7:18 p.m. Trooper Matthew LaVita and other officers from the Newbury state police barracks responded, along with the Merrimac Fire Department and state Highway Department.

The left lane of the southbound side of I-495 was shut down for an hour and a half while troopers with the Collision and Analysis Reconstruction and Crime Scene Services sections investigated the crash, Richard said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, he said.
