HAVERHILL — The city has lifted the ban on nighttime outdoor recreational activities that was put in place Sept. 21 due to the threat of the EEE virus.
The ban was in effect until the first hard frost, which city officials said happened over the weekend. David Van Dam, Mayor James Fiorentini's chief of staff, said the mayor ordered the ban lifted today at the recommendation of Board of Health Chairman Dr. Carl Rosenbloom. Van Dam said nighttime activities at public recreation areas in the city can resume. He said said schools can also resume their normal outdoor activities, including sporting events.
While the ban was in effect, city sports fields had to be vacated by sunset and no activities were allowed prior to sunrise because those hours were considered the greatest threat of bites from mosquitoes carrying the virus.
