Fallen trees in Haverhill block roads, take down power lines

HAVERHILL — The storm has knocked down trees in various parts of the city, causing power failures, road closings and traffic detours.

"We're getting reports from all over the city'' of trees knocked down by the strong winds, police Lt. Kevin Dorr said shortly after 3 p.m.

A large tree fell across power wires on Route 110 near the eastern end of Concord Street, knocking down a utility pole and forcing police to block off Route 110 and detour traffic onto nearby streets.

Farther down Route 110, fallen trees forced police to block off Whittier Road near the landmark birthplace of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The scene was the same elsewhere in the city, as trees and branches fell due to the high winds.
