Police seek suspect in Salem assault, theft

SALEM — Authorities are looking for a Concord man who assaulted and injured a state trooper who stopped to assist him on Interstate 93 south.

Sean McGurk, 42, of 61 Washington St., Apt. A, fled into the woods shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday after an altercation with Trooper James Powers, state police said.

Powers believed McGurk's car had broken down and he needed assistance. When Powers approached McGurk, the trooper became suspicious and McGurk tried to flee.

Powers used a Taser and pepper spray on McKurk, but he managed to escape. Both men suffered minor injuries during the altercation, state police said.

State and Salem police followed McGurk's tracks to a nearby home, where he stole a vehicle and drove off. Authorities believe he may be in the Haverhill, Mass., area, where the stolen vehicle was later found.

Police said McGurk may seek help for treatment of his injuries. McGurk is considered to be dangerous and faces several charges, state police said. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs approximately 185 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes.

Anyone with information on McGurk is asked to call Powers or Sgt. Bryan Trask at 603-223-4381.
