Liquor store held up Christmas Eve

Clerk struck in head with gun by robber who fled with money, booze and cigarettes

HAVERHILL — Quality Brand Liquors at 185 S. Elm St. got a very unmerry visitor on Christmas Eve.

A clerk at the store was smacked on the head with a handgun by a robber who then emptied the cash register and fled on foot up Bradford Avenue, deputy police Chief Donald Thompson said.

Thompson said the suspect entered the store at 4:40 p.m. dressed in jeans and a black jacket, wearing a ski mask over his face and holding a silver revolver handgun. The deputy said the suspect demanded money from the cash register, but the clerk thought it was a joke.

The suspect, who remains at large, then hit the clerk in the temple with the handgun, Thompson said. The clerk sustained a “bump on the head” but declined medical treatment, Thompson said.

The robber also stole a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of booze, said Thompson, who described the robber as white, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds.
