Police: Man grew pot in home

GROVELAND — A local man is charged with growing marijuana in his home and selling the drug to police posing as buyers.

Neighbors in the Wood Avenue area complained about suspicious activity at the home, Deputy Chief Jeffrey Gillen said.

Police arranged several undercover purchases of drugs during the last month, he said. They received help from Haverhill police, he said.

Jonathan Wood, 23, of 6 Wood Ave., was arrested Friday and charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of the prescription drug Adderall with intent to distribute, and cultivating and distributing marijuana. Judge Stephen Abany ordered Wood held in lieu of $500 cash bail at his arraignment in Haverhill District Court on Monday morning.

Wood's roommate, Tor Larson, 22, will be summonsed into court on charges of cultivating marijuana, Gillen said.

Friday morning, police obtained a search warrant from Haverhill District Court and went to Wood's home. There they found a 4-foot-tall marijuana plant and five marijuana stocks, Gillen said. They also found several marijuana plants growing in the cellar, along with lamps and timers, the deputy chief said.

Several police officers, including two from Haverhill, were deployed for the search because they received information Wood had a .45-caliber revolver in the house. That report turned out to be false, Gillen said.

"We had to be prepared," he said.

Gillen said he did not have an estimate on the quantity of the drugs seized or their street value.

Groveland Detective James Morton directed the investigation and search. Sgt. Dana Burrill and Patrolman Bryan Bailey of the Haverhill police, as well as Gillen and Groveland patrolmen Michael Traister, Heather Riley, Kevin Woodman and Eric Gorski took part in the search.

Morton found Wood in his bed.

"This is a quality-of-life issue," said Gillen, noting Wood Avenue is a quiet residential neighborhood.

Wood was ordered to return to court for a pretrial conference June 22.
