Music studio owners free after rape hearing

Teacher charged with impregnating girl, 14

HAVERHILL — A couple who operate a music studio in Haverhill where accused child rapist Joshua Garsteck worked are free on personal recognizance as their case moves forward in court.

Michael DeAngelis and Nancy Burger, co-owners of DeAngelis Studio of Music in Lafayette Square, were indicted on Jan. 2 by an Essex County Grand Jury. They were arraigned in Essex Superior Court in Salem, Mass. on Friday on charges of reckless endangerment of a child.

Burger and DeAngelis were released on personal recognizance, with a condition that they comply with all orders of the state Department of Children & Families. Specifics about those orders are were not available.

During Friday’s hearing, defense attorney John Hanrahan took issue with the conditions of release, contending that he should be able to “vet” each DCF order.

The prosecutor was adamant however, saying the couple had already ignored a request by DCF that they not let Garsteck near other children at the music studio.

Judge John Lu ordered that Burger and DeAngelis obey all DCF orders while the case is pending.

A pretrial conference was scheduled for April 25.

The Eagle-Tribune previously reported that the music studio had terminated its contract with Garsteck pending the results of an investigation that eventually resulted in criminal charges against him.

When contacted yesterday by The Eagle-Tribune, Nancy Burger referred all questions to her lawyer, Hanrahan of North Andover. Hanrahan did not return a phone call seeking comment.

The indictment grew out of a case against Garsteck, whom police charged last fall with impregnating a 14-year-old student from Amesbury.

According to a police report on file in Haverhill District Court, on May 29 of last year the state’s Department of Children & Families (DCF) notified Haverhill police about the alleged sexual abuse of a child by her “voice coach,” Garsteck.
