Police in Haverhill are asking the public for help in locating the driver of a car that struck and injured a 10-year-old boy who was in a crosswalk along with several other boys.
The hit-and-run accident happened Monday at 5:05 p.m. Police said about five boys were attempting to cross Broadway and were in a crosswalk in front of the St. Joseph School Bowling Alley when a vehicle that was heading into Lafayette Square and traveling east on Broadway stopped to let them cross.
But as they crossed the street, a silver Mercedes-Benz driven by a man who was heading west failed to stop for the group in the crosswalk,
Police said the Mercedes struck a 10-year-old boy and continued on.
Police said the boy suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, then transferred to a Boston area hospital.
"The boy was run over and had bruising and tire marks on his back," Police Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Haverhill Police Detective Carl Rogers at 978-373-1212.
