SALISBURY — A Bradford woman was arrested yesterday after admitting to breaking into Lena’s Seafood on Rabbit Road Monday evening, according to police.
Britnee McBrierty, 23, of 406 South Main St., Bradford, was charged with nighttime breaking and entering of a building to commit a felony and malicious destruction of property. She was expected to be arraigned in Newburyport District Court yesterday afternoon.
Georgetown police were at the Railroad Avenue police station yesterday following her arrest to investigate whether McBrierty was responsible for a recent break-in in that community.
Salisbury police Chief Thomas Fowler said police detectives received an anonymous tip after seeing a photo published in yesterday’s Newburyport Daily News of the suspect walking through Lena’s. The photo had been taken by a security camera at Lena’s and given to the News by Salisbury police. Police then called McBrierty who agreed to come to the station for an interview. During the interview, McBrierty implicated herself in the Lena’s Seafood break-in and was then formally charged.
Around 6:35 p.m. on Monday, police responded to a report of a suspicious woman in front of the popular seafood restaurant, which was closed for the evening. The caller also reported seeing the suspect look through the windows of Cosmo’s Restaurant across the street. The suspect was seen leaving the area in a dark-colored, two-door sedan with a large white decal on the driver’s side door. The vehicle, according to police, headed down Main Street toward Amesbury.
It appears McBrierty gained access to the popular eatery by breaking a window. A video camera captured McBrierty rummaging through the restaurant looking for valuables. It was a still from the video footage that was instrumental in her eventual surrender. An inventory of the restaurant, which was open for business yesterday, showed that nothing had been stolen, according to police.
“I want to thank the community for stepping up and identifying this suspect,” Fowler said, adding that the community’s continued involvement in police matters is key toward reducing crime townwide.
