HAVERHILL — Police are warning people to be aware of who is around them, after two incidents in which women were caught off guard by men who robbed cash from them.
In one case, the victim was threatened with a gun, police said.
The first incident happened on Saturday at 5:30 a.m., when an 18-year-old woman who was sleeping in her car on River Street was awakened by two men, police said. The woman told police she was sleeping in her car in the area of 106 River St., when she woke up to the sound of tapping on the window.
The woman said she saw two men outside the car, both of whom were wearing white and black bandanas. One of the men was holding a gun, she said. The gunman told the woman to roll down her window and then demanded money from her, she told police.
Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said the woman handed the men $10 and they left the area. Thompson said the police report on the incident did not indicate whether the men wore the bandanas to hide their faces. Descriptions of the men were not available at the time of this report. There was no explanation in the police report of why the woman was sleeping in her car. Police Detective Carl Rogers is investigating.
The second incident happened on Sunday at 1:50 a.m., when a 44-year-old woman was returning from the CVS in Monument Square. The woman told police she was walking on Arlington Street near Webster Street when she heard a voice. She said a man approached her from behind, punched her and took $50 that she was carrying.
Thompson said according to a police report, the woman appeared to have suffered a facial injury in the attack and was taken by ambulance to Merrimack Valley Hospital for evaluation. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate a suspect, police said. Detective Joseph Benedetti is investigating.
Police do not believe the two incidents are related, but are asking women to take notice of who or what is around them.
“As we’ve said before, always be aware of your surroundings,” Thompson said.
