Three stabbed at birthday party

HAVERHILL — Three male youths were stabbed at a birthday party on Sandler Terrace late Saturday or early Sunday, police said.

None of the wounds were life-threatening and all were treated at Lawrence General Hospital, according to police Deputy Chief Donald Thompson. Two of the injured were later taken to a Boston hospital.

Police went to 14 Sandler Terrace at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, Thompson said, after receiving a report about a large juvenile party there. The first officers to respond saw several young people walking away from the scene, he said.

One of the young people told police there had been a stabbing at the party after a fight broke out, the deputy chief said. The fight resulted from several uninvited youths from Lawrence showing up at the party, Thompson said.

Other officers heading for Sandler Terrace encountered two of the victims on Washington Street, Thompson said. One, a 15-year-old, had been stabbed in the face. The other, age 18, had been stabbed in the left side of his head and on the cheek, Thompson said. Those two victims were transported to Lawrence General Hospital, then transferred to a Boston hospital, he said.

The third victim, 18, who suffered a laceration to his left arm, went to Lawrence General on his own.

The party was organized by the mother of a young man who had just turned 17, Thompson said.

"People are not readily cooperating with the investigation," he said. Police, however, hope to make arrests in the case, Thompson said.

Detective Joseph Benedetti is heading the investigation. He is joined by Detective Jack Moses and Patrolman Sean Scharneck, Haverhill High School's resource officer.

Some of the people at the party are Haverhill High School students, Thompson said.

Anyone with information about the stabbings is asked to call Benedetti at 978-373-1212, ext. 563.
