Party turns violent in Haverhill, police say

Host hit in head with hammer

HAVERHILL — A weekend party at a 4th Avenue apartment turned violent, when the host was struck in the head with a hammer, police said.

Police said the man's head was cut, but he refused medical treatment. About 3 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of a fight and large party at 5 4th Ave. When officers arrived, several people were running out of the house and jumping over the backyard fence, police said. The resident of the apartment answered the door and told police he was attacked by a man he did not know, but he would not provide any additional information. Police found the hammer in the street. Police planned to file a complaint against the victim for keeping a disorderly house.

In an unrelated incident, a Lincolnshire Drive man reported his Magellan Roadmate 300 GPS device worth $200 was stolen from his van sometime between 6 p.m. and midnight on Saturday. He said his driver's side window was smashed and the window frame damaged. Police said they do not have any suspects.
