Governor coming to Haverhill tomorrow to talk transportation

HAVERHILL - Gov. Deval Patrick will be in Haverhill tomorrow to talk with constituents about the 19-cent gas tax hike he is proposing along with other transportation reforms.

Haverhill Library Director Carol Verny said she is honored the library was chosen as the spot for Patrick to talk about his transportation reforms. She described the event as a Town Hall forum for citizens to talk to the governor.

"It's wonderful to have it at the library. This library is very much the center of the community," she said. "We're honored to have him here and hope the citizens of Haverhill come out."

The Town Hall meeting with Patrick will be at 2 p.m. in the library's reference area, Verny said. It is open to the public.

Patrick's Transportation and Economic Security Package includes proposals to hike the gas tax, eliminate perks in the MBTA pension system, abolish the Turnpike Authority and make the state's transportation system more user- and environmentally-friendly, as well as deal with a $15 to $19 million transportation.

Verny said parking is available at the library as well along nearby streets.
