The Veterans Northeast Outreach Center in Haverhill will receive $2,000. So will the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill and Haverhill High School's sports program, to go toward user fees.
Each will benefit from a recent golf tournament fundraiser sponsored by Haverhill police and firefighters and Charlie's Variety on Groveland Street. The Public Safety Golf Tournament that was at the Renaissance golf course brought in $6,000, said police spokesman Sgt. John Arahovites.
"In these hard economic times, we felt that these three organizations could use the money," he said. "At Haverhill High, we have kids that can't even play sports because of the user fees."
Arahovites said the Renaissance golf club donated the use of its course and facilities for the event.
Soles of Haverhill Shoe-la-bration planned
The public is invited to watch award-winning artist Rob Sardella paint one of the life-size fiberglass shoes, sponsored by local dentist Dr. Alan Gonick, for the Soles of Haverhill Shoe-la-bration at Buttonwoods Museum on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The shoe design is called "Gotta Ya" and focuses on the history of Haverhill.
The Soles of Haverhill Shoe-la-bration is a summerlong public art installation that will feature 5-foot-tall, vividly painted fiberglass sculptures of a high-button shoe, just like the ladies footwear Haverhill was once famous for producing. Each shoe will tell its own story and the city's, too.
The shoes will be on display from July through October, when they will be sold at auction to support local nonprofit groups and historical, cultural and art activities.
More details on the Open Studio with Sardella is available by calling Jan Williams at Buttonwoods Museum at 978-374-4626. More information about the Soles of Haverhill Shoe-la-bration is available by contacting Leota Sarrette at lsarrette@aol.com or by visiting Soles of Haverhill.com.
