6th Congressional debate sponsored by Merrimack Valley Chamber is tonight

NORTH ANDOVER – The Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a debate for 6th Congressional District candidates tonight at North Andover High School.

Congressman John Tierney, D-Salem, district includes all of North Andover and a few precincts in Andover, is facing a severe challenge from former state Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield.

A third candidate, Libertarian Daniel Fishman, will also participate.

The debate begins at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Those who get there between 6:15 and 6:45 will be permitted to write questions that will be placed in a basket. Two questions will be selected at random and posed to the contenders.

Previous debates between Tierney and Tisei have been tense. Tierney’s brother-in-law, Daniel Eremian, said in June said that the congressman “knew everything” about his illegal gambling operation. Eremian was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the enterprise.

His brother Robert Eremian remains a fugitive in Antigua. Tierney’s wife Patrice, sister of the Eremians, served a month in jail after she pleaded guilty to tax fraud for her handling of Robert Eremian’s financial affairs in the United States.

Tisei has gone after Tierney on the basis of Daniel Eremian’s accusation. Tierney has attacked Tisei, accusing him of being allied with right wingers such as the Tea Party and Rush Limbaugh.
