Mass. AG Coakley: I'm not running for Kerry's Senate seat

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley says she won’t be a candidate for the John Kerry’s Senate seat if he is confirmed as secretary of states.

Coakley had been seen as a potential candidate despite losing a special election in 2010 against Republican Sen. Scott Brown. Although she’s downplayed interest in running for the seat, she hadn’t expressly ruled it out until now.

On Friday, hours after President Obama tapped Kerry for the diplomatic post, Coakley took her name out of the running.

In a one sentence statement, Coakley said loves her job and won’t run for the Senate seat.

There are plenty of other potential candidates on both sides of the political aisle, including Brown, who lost a re-election campaign last month to Democrat Elizabeth Warren but could mount a campaign for Kerry’s open seat.
