Police not identifying man pinned under tree

Say relatives must be notified

HAVERHILL — Police are not yet identifying the young man who was pinned under a fallen tree this afternoon, saying they must first notify his relatives.

Witnesses said the man suffered severe injuries to his legs. Late this afternoon, police refused to discuss the extent of the injuries or whether they are life threatening.

Police said they might not release the man's name until tomorrow.

The tree fell on the man this afternoon in the area of 133 North Ave. He was taken from the scene shortly after 2 p.m. and rushed to Lawrence General Hospital's trauma center.

Witnesses said a large tree which recently received damage in a storm was was being removed by Plante's Tree Removal Takedown company. A company truck was parked at the scene.

Police blocked off North Avenue between Marsh Avenue and Sagamore Place and surrounded the area with "crime scene'' tape. A chain saw was on the ground near the fallen tree.

A man at the scene said he called 911 immediately after the accident. He said another worker at the scene yelled, "One of my guys is under the tree!"

A pickup truck at the scene was put on a ramp truck and removed from the scene. Police Lt. Anthony Haugh said, "All we're saying is there was an accident involving a tree."
