Tip leads to woman's arrest for child endangerment

NORTH ANDOVER — A tip from a concerned citizen resulted in a woman being arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and child endangerment, police said.

The citizen called at 3:25 p.m. Sunday and reported that a maroon-colored SUV was being driven in an erratic manner near Peters Street, according to the police log.

Officers Jason Wedge and Stephen Diminico were dispatched to check out the complaint. Wedge stopped the vehicle on Peters Street and after investigating arrested the driver, Michelle Tavano, 45, of 40 Locke St., Haverhill.

An 11-year-old child was in the car with Tavano, police Lt. Charles Gray said. He declined to say whether the child was Tavano’s.

Gray pointed out that an arrest for driving under the influence of drugs does not automatically imply the person is high on an illegal narcotic.

“It could be a prescribed medication,” he noted. He did not reveal what drug Tavano is alleged to have taken.

Asked what residents should do if they see drivers who appear to be impaired, Gray said, “Call the station (978-683-3168) and report what you see.”

Chief Paul Gallagher, he said, is “adamant” that the police investigate reports of dangerously impaired drivers.
