Illnesses prompts 'health alert'

WEST NEWBURY — Pentucket Regional High School canceled all sports and after-school activities yesterday so the school could be disinfected after officials reported a widespread virus among students.

Officials said the students have been stricken with norovirus, an illness that affects the stomach and intestines and is marked by stomach cramping, throwing up, or diarrhea.

“Our school nurse contacted the Massachusetts Department of Health due to the large number of students who have been affected,” Principal Jonathan Seymour said in “health alert” posted on the high school’s website.

“We are currently implementing the recommendations of the Massachusetts Department of Health, which include restricting access to the school and conducting disinfection procedures. Consequently, student athletic events scheduled today are being postponed. The disinfection process is underway,” Seymour continued.

“Our precautions and procedures are aligned with the recommendations from the Health Department and will ensure the health of our students and staff. If your child is symptomatic, please keep them home from school,” he said.
