Haverhill man hit by car near shopping center

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — HAVERHILL — A Haverhill man suffered non-life threatening injuries early last night when a car drove into him on Lowell Avenue near the Westgate Shopping Plaza, police said.

Police said the man, who is in his early 20s, was crossing the street and headed to his home at 132 Hunters Run Place shortly after 6 p.m. when a 2008 Volkswagen hit him. He wound up on the windshield of the car and was knocked unconscious, according to police.

Initially, rescue workers considered having the man flown by a medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. With a helicopter not immediately available, he was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment. The injuries included broken ribs, police said. No information was available on the identity of the pedestrian or the driver, also a Haverhill resident, pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.

Because the pedestrian was initially unconscious and had no recollection of what happened, police called in Officer Lance Powell to conduct an accident reconstruction. He continued to investigate the crash last night and had made no determination on whether to charge the driver, police said.
