HAVERHILL - When Shawn Robbins went out to his car about 4 a.m. yesterday, he noticed palm prints in the dew on the car's roof. Then he realized someone had been used a coathanger or other device to unlock his car."They took a few CDs, my cell phone charger and my registration, which was in a case that looked like a CD case," Robbins said yesterday afternoon. The burglars were thorough, he said."They opened the trunk and the gas cap," he said.He said he looked at a few other cars in the parking lot of his apartment building at 28 Victor St. and noticed palm prints on those cars as well.Robbins said when he called police he was told they had received about 37 reports of car breaks. But Sgt. John Arahovites said he could confirm only nine cars had been entered or broken into in the Pine Brook Place, Mount Duston Avenue and Warrenton Road areas. One car window was smashed to gain entry.CDs, sunglasses and radar detectors were taken from two cars on Mount Duston Avenue, Arahovites said. A backpack, exercise and running gear were taken from a car on Warrenton Road, he said.Nothing appeared missing from three cars that were entered. Two other car breaks were reported earlier in the evening.Talia Erinna called police at 8:25 p.m. to report she parked her car on Elm Street at 6 p.m. and when she returned at 8:15 p.m., found a passenger side rear window had been broken and the stereo removed.Rafe Penney called police at 10:29 p.m. to report his car had been broken into. He told police that after he parked the car near 116 Cedar St., someone threw a cobblestone through the passenger side window, got into the car and rifled the glovebox, stealing an iPod Nano.Arahovites said people should avoid leaving valuables in plain view in their cars, especially at this time of year, and they should be sure to lock their cars.He said if people hear glass smashing or car doors opening and closing, they should call police right away.
