Red Sox cap, jacket help identify store robber, police say

HAVERHILL - The Red Sox cap and jacket was a dead giveaway.

Police said when they went to the home of Mark Klier, who was suspected of robbing the Walgreens on River Street, he answered the door wearing the cap and jacket. It was the same way he was dressed in a store surveillance videotape that captured him robbing $200 from the store Jan. 22, police said.

Klier, 49, of 34 Park St., Lawrence, was arrested Tuesday at 10 a.m. at his home by detectives from Lawrence and Haverhill. Police said they believe this solves one of a series of store robberies in Haverhill in the last month.

Haverhill Detective Sgt. Dana Burrill said Klier was wearing the Red Sox hat and jacket when police surrounded his home and knocked on the door.

"The items were taken for evidence," Burrill said.

During the robbery of the Walgreens at 580 River St., a man identified from the video by police as Klier walked up to the cash register to buy a candy bar, police said. They said when the female clerk opened the register, he gave her a note saying she was being robbed. She handed over $200 cash and he fled the area in a blue car, police said.

Police said they reviewed the security video and fingerprint evidence, which led to Klier.

Police said he also was wanted by Amesbury police on warrants charging him with assault and battery on a police officer, and on warrants from Salem Superior Court on felony charges of breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, larceny over $250, and attempting to commit a crime, in an unrelated case.

Investigators are still seeking a suspect in the Jan. 2 robbery of the Walgreens at 310 Main St., and the Jan. 7 holdup of the Sovereign Bank branch at 400 Lowell Ave. That robber also is believed to have held up a Sovereign Bank branch in Londonderry, N.H., on Dec. 24, Burrill said.

Police said they do not believe Klier was involved in those crimes.
