Northern Essex dancers present spring performance on Haverhill campus

HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College will present its 34th season of Still Point dance performances April 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. in the Sport and Fitness Center on the Haverhill campus.

This year's performance will showcase dancers in the college's new Afro-Caribbean dance class performing West African and Puerto Rican dances choreographed by their instructor Lisa Leake. Dances include "Gahu," "Senegal-Ease" and "Bomba Basics."

NECC dance instructor Michelle Deane has choreographed a jazz/modern piece in the techno/club tradition titled "After We Orbit." Additionally, NECC dance instructor Stephanie Morris will lead the college's dance club in a journey of dance energy with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Mortal Combat."

Professor Emerita Elaine Mawhinney, who founded the Still Point dancers in 1972, is contributing to this year's performance. Participating dance classes are: Dance in Performance, Jazz Dance, Dance Repertory, and the college's newest dance offering, Afro-Caribbean Dance.

Each performance is individualized through selective lighting, costuming and music.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and $3 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased in advance by contacting Lisa Leake at lleake@necc.mass.edu or by calling 978-556-3583. Tickets also will be available at the door.
