Six students commended by National Merit program

Six Haverhill High School students — Ashley Brown, Mark Lalli, Alexandra Martines, Evan Pare, Derek Valcourt and Jacob Weisberg — have been named commended students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship program.

A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp. will be presented by Principal Bernard Nangle to these seniors.

About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, commended students placed among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Sacred Hearts School Fair this weekend

Sacred Hearts School will host its fair Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the school at South Main and South Chestnut streets.

Supper will be served Friday night and a light breakfast will be offered Saturday morning. Activities will take place inside and on school grounds.

Several gift baskets will be raffled and there will be activities for children.

Target helps Haverhill High

As part of the September Take Charge of Education donation, the local Target is awarding Haverhill High School with a check. This payout is a direct result of the parents, teachers and school supporters who participate in the program, which has earned Haverhill High $5,559, according to Principal Bernard Nangle.

Through Take Charge of Education, families, teachers and members of the community can raise money for their schools. When they sign up and designate an eligible elementary, middle or secondary school, Target donates up to 1 percent of every purchase they make with their REDcard (Target, Visa card, Target credit card or Target check card) to that school. Take Charge of Education dollars are donated to schools twice a year. Over the past 11 years, schools have used the money wherever it was needed, whether it was books, field trips, new technology or supplies.

Touchdown Club plans cookout

The Haverhill Touchdown Club will host a tailgating cookout inside Haverhill Stadium for Friday night's football game against Chelmsford High School.

The cookout will start at 5 p.m., with a social hour after the game at Kelly's Restaurant in Bradford. All grills and food will be provided. Admission is free at the gate for Touchdown Club members. New members may join the club that night. Cost is $25 per person and includes admission to all home football games, free parking inside the stadium and Thanksgiving Day breakfast.

It supports not only Haverhill football but all sports at the high school. More information is available from the athletics office at the high school at 978-374-5732 or Pat Gobbi at 978-372-0237.
