Volunteers needed to deliver 900 plants to Haverhill nursing homes

The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Sovereign Bank and local service clubs, will deliver potted chrysanthemums to the residents in Haverhill's nursing homes, Merrimack Valley Hospital and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital on Oct. 25, from 9 to 11 a.m., as part of National Make a Difference Day.

More than 900 plants will be delivered to the nursing homes and volunteers are needed. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call the chamber at 978-373-5663 or e-mail jen@haverhillchamber.com.

Volunteers will meet on top of the parking deck in downtown Haverhill to pick up their plants and receive nursing home assignments. Chamber members and members and supporters of the Haverhill Exchange Club, Haverhill Kiwanis Club, Haverhill Rotary Club, Pentucket Kiwanis Club and the Plaistow Exchange Club, as well as general community members, are welcome. Children are encouraged to participate.

Winter coat drive on

Anton's Cleaners has launched the 14th annual Coats for Kids winter coat drive, with the goal of collecting 60,000 coats.

Now the largest coat drive of its kind in the Northeast, the drive runs through Dec. 31.

"Coats for Kids faces some unique obstacles this year because of the times we live in," said Charles Anton, CEO of Anton's Cleaners. "But Coats for Kids has become a true community event over the years, involving schools, businesses, and local residents, all of whom want to help those in need."

Jordan's Furniture stores in Avon, Natick and Reading as well as Nashua, N.H., will serve as drop-off points for coats.

Once collected and cleaned, the coats will be distributed through organizations such as the Salvation Army, Massachusetts Community Action Program, Cradles to Crayons, Southern New Hampshire Services, Lowell Wish Project, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, Community Giving Tree, and the Boston University Medical Center: Outreach Van Project.

More information is available at www.antons.com or call the Coats for Kids hot line at 800-659-0069.

Hospital offers flu shots

Merrimack Valley Hospital will offer flu shots Nov. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the hospital atrium on the first floor.

The clinic is open to anyone 18 or older who needs a flu shot. People with Medicare should bring their health insurance cards for billing purposes. The cost for those paying out of pocket is $30. More information is available by calling Susan Wald-Thomas at 978-521-8625.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people get their flu vaccination as soon as the vaccine becomes available in their communities.

Vaccination before December is best since the timing ensures that protective antibodies are in place before the flu is typically at its highest.
