St. Joseph School offers electronics recycling Saturday

Next spring, Christopher Swain will dive into the Atlantic Ocean in Boston and begin an 800-mile swim to Washington, D.C., in an effort to plead the case of the world's oceans.

Before performing that feat, however, he will host an electronics recycling event at St. Joseph School on Saturday.

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., people can go to the lower schoolyard off Broadway and for $1 a pound, recycle their used electronics.

Items that will be accepted include: televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, drives, cables, cords, peripherals, copiers, printers, cartridges, fax machines, scanners, laptops, stereo equipment, speakers, CD and DVD players, telephones, remote controls, VCRs, projectors, digital cameras, PDAs, speakers, radios, answering machines, camcorders, electric typewriters, video game systems, pagers, microwaves, toasters, USB media, and magnetic media such as zip disks, audio tapes and floppy diskettes.

Participants will be offered the chance to neutralize the carbon footprint of their used electronics. Net proceeds will benefit environmental initiatives at St. Joseph School.

Swain, an environmental educator based in Massachusetts, talked to students at St. Joseph School about ways to keep e-waste from ending up in the oceans at an assembly Tuesday.
