New year features new school leaders

HAVERHILL — New principals at three of the city's four middle schools are among the changes parents and students will encounter this year.

Toni Donais, who has taught in Haverhill for 30 years, is now the principal of Whittier Middle School. She takes over from Beth Kitsos, who accepted the job of associate principal at Haverhill High. Donais also will be in charge of the academic programs at Crowell and Walnut Square elementary schools.

Stephen Sierpina, who has led Hunking Middle School for the past year, is now principal of Consentino Middle School. He replaces Mary Malone, who was recently promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum.

Sierpina's post at Hunking is held by Dorothy Flaherty, assistant principal there for the past four years and a former School Committee member. Flaherty also will be in charge of the academic program at Greenleaf Elementary School.

Nathan Gage is the new assistant principal at Hunking and Russell Marino is the new assistant principal at Tilton Elementary School.

John Mele, former assistant principal of Tilton, is now an assistant principal at Consentino.

Consentino Assistant Principal Timothy Maroney has additional responsibilities and will oversee administrative and supervisory duties for Crowell, Walnut Square and Greenleaf schools. Maroney will meet weekly with the principals of Hunking and Whittier middle schools to collaborate and brief them on academic and operational issues.
