Haverhill rabbi Korinow named Unsung Hero

HAVERHILL — Rabbi Ira Korinow of Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill has been named recipient of the Unsung Hero Award from the Merrimack Valley Chapter of the NAACP. This special honor will be presented at the Freedom Fund Awards Dinner on Nov. 2 at the UMass Inn & Conference Center in Lowell.

Over 25 years ago, Korinow started the joint Martin Luther King Day service with Temple Emanu-El and Calvary Baptist Church. This service has become one of the foremost observances of MLK day in the area. Korinow is also a founding member of the Haverhill Civil Rights Commission, and serves as its president.

Korinow has served as spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El since 1981. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by his rabbinical school in New York. In 1994, Korinow participated in a peace mission with other rabbis meeting with political, academic and business leaders in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. He is a member of the National Rabbinic Cabinet of the United Jewish Communities, working for the humanitarian needs of people around the world. Korinow was the prime organizer and serves as the current chairman of the Greater Haverhill Civil Rights Commission.

Two Central seniors named National Merit scholar semifinalists

LAWRENCE — Officials at the National Merit Scholarship Corporation have announced that Central Catholic High School seniors Daniel Golden and Leszek Krol, have been named 2014 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Daniel Golden is the son of Christopher and Concetta Golden of Bradford, and Leszek Krol is the son of Maureen Krol of Methuen.

Semifinalists are recognized for achieving a score on the National Merit Scholarship Exam that places them in the top one-half of 1 percent nationally out of over 3 million students tested. Golden and Krol now compete to earn National Merit Finalist status based on academic and extra-curricular achievements. Finalists are eligible for National Merit Scholarships for college or university studies which will be awarded in the Spring of 2014.
