Spotlight on Youth Summer Theater

Spotlight Playhouse, the theater company based in Haverhill, is expanding its Spotlight on Youth summer theater programs.

Building on the success of last summer’s production of “The Jungle Book,” Spotlight will offer “Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventure” for youths entering grades 6 to 12. The play is based on Kenneth Grahame’s classic children’s story, “The Wind in the Willows.”

Auditions will take place on June 26 and 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Church, 278 Groveland St. Rehearsals are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning July 16 with two performances on the evenings of Aug. 16 and 17.

Spotlight Playhouse is also offering three separate weeklong musical theatre workshops for children entering grades 2 to 5. The workshops will run weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will culminate with performances for family and friends on Fridays at noon.

The first session, July 15 to 19 is a production of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses.” Session 2 is July 22 to 26 and features “The Trial of The Big Bad Wolf.”

The final session, July 29 to Aug. 2 is a production called “The Bamboo Cutter and The Moon Princess.” All Spotlight on Youth programs will be directed by Haverhill public school music teacher and Haverhill resident, Lauren Sprague.

The main stage production and workshops will be held at Riverside Memorial Church 278 Groveland St. An information night for parents and children will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Spotlight’s second floor rehearsal space at 24 Essex St.
