Man charged in domestic assault held without bail

HAVERHILL — A Washington Street man accused of punching his girlfriend in the face and then keeping her in the bathroom for a half-hour was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing today.

David Dow, 29, of 436 Washington St., was arrested at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday and charged with kidnapping, domestic assault and battery, and intimidating a witness.

According to a report filed with Haverhill District Court by police, Dow's 37-year-old live-in girlfriend said he punched her on the left side of the face after they had an argument about their relationship.

He then kept her in the bathroom against her will for 30 minutes, according to the report. When the woman asked Dow if she could use his phone — presumably to call police — he refused, police said. Then, when she went into her bedroom and logged on to her computer, Dow snatched it away from her, according to the police report.

She was eventually able to leave their apartment, borrow a phone from a neighbor and call police, the report said.

Dow admitted arguing with his girlfriend and refusing to let her use his phone, but he denied hitting her, police said. An emergency medical technician with Trinity EMS gave the victim an ice pack for the swelling on her face, but she did not have to be hospitalized, according to the report.

Dow, whose right forearm bears a tattoo depicting the Chinese symbol for strength, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment in Haverhill District Court yesterday. Judge Stephen Abany scheduled the dangerousness hearing for today. The hearing will determine whether Dow should continue to be held until other court action in the case.
