Haverhill in a Minute

The Orient Express Food, Wine and Beer Pairing will be Sept. 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Haverhill Country Club.

The event benefits Merrimack Valley Hospice and features samplings of food and beverages from cities along the famous Orient Express. Scheduled "stops" include London, Vienna, Venice, Athens and Istanbul. There will be entertainment and a silent auction featuring an Apple iPad, four tickets to a Red Sox-Yankees game in Fenway Park's pavilion level, a Bruins team autographed hockey stick and vacation destinations.

Together, the three agencies serve more than 90 communities throughout the Merrimack Valley, Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.

Kiwanis members honored

The Kiwanis Club of Haverhill recently honored several members with Legion of Honor awards in recognition of their service to the club.

The Legion of Honor, an award of Kiwanis International, was created to extend a token of appreciation to Kiwanians with 25 years of service or more. Awards went to: Club President Dave Arel and Bob Penny of Salisbury; Jim Maroney, Duncan Farmer, Lou Farmer, John Katsaros, Barney Gallagher, Bill House, Tom Zangari, Wayne Hogan and Bob Masys of Haverhill; Fred Noone of Seabrook; Frank Pallaria and Alfred Cirome of Atkinson; and Tom Thornton of Hampton. Three members received an inscribed plaque in recognition of their more than 50 years of membership. They are Cirome, Lou Farmer and Katsaros of Haverhill. Special recognition for more than 50 years of service went to Cirome, Duncan Farmer and Katsaros, who have a combined total of 175 years of service to the Kiwanis Club of Haverhill. In their honor, Arel donated $1,750 to the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, a partnership between the new England District of Kiwanis and the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Local DAV chapter to meet

The DAV Hannah Dustin Chapter 20 will hold its first meeting of the fall on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the veterans room in the basement of City Hall, 4 Summer St.

The agenda includes a discussion of new legislation regarding veterans' benefits. Guest speakers include officers from the state department of the DAV. Those who wish to attend this meeting are asked to contact Commander Gerard Boucher at 978-521-3982 or grboucher@mva.net.

Green courses offered at NECC Riverwalk

Northern Essex Community College is offering a number of noncredit green courses, some leading to certificates, at its newest location, NECC Riverwalk at 360 Merrimack St., Building 9, in Lawrence.

A new Sustainability Essentials Certificate Program comprises two courses taught by Mark Myles, principal of Sustainnovation Consulting, and is designed for business owners who are interested in sustainability but don't know where to start. The first course, "Green Principles and Practices," will be held Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m., Sept. 27 through Oct. 25 (no class Oct. 11). The cost is $219. The second course, Sustainable Business Operations and Opportunities, is offered Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m., Nov. 1 through Nov. 15. The cost is $163.

NECC is also offering "The Green Home: Residential Sustainable Design" on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., Oct. 26 through Nov. 16. Seminar studies Alzheimer's disease

Better understanding the minds and perspective of people with Alzheimer's disease is the topic of a seminar to be held Sept. 29 at Haverhill Crossings senior living community complex.

A light dinner will be served at 5 p.m., followed by the presentation at 5:30 p.m. Haverhill Crossings is at 254 Amesbury Road. Nurse and Alzheimer's consultant Mal Allard will discuss how to better care for, communicate with and cope with people who suffer from the disease by entering their world. Participants will learn how people with dementia and Alzheimer's may think or feel. The seminar will also examine how to address the emotions of dementia and ways to promote positive communication and interaction.
