Haverhill voters approve new school

HAVERHILL — The city will get a new school.

Voters in today's balloting overwhelmingly supported building a new school to replace the deteriorated Hunking School.

The final vote totals were: 4,807 in favor of the school and 1,778 against the plan. Polls closed at 8 p.m.

Construction of the school will start in the spring of next year, with the building to open to 1,000 students in 2017.

All 21 of Haverhill's voting precincts supported the plan to pay Haverhill's share of the construction cost. The state will pay close to two-thirds of the cost.

A complete report, including reaction, will appear in tomorrow's Eagle-Tribune.
