Police investigate death of 2-year-old girl

Refuse to release details, but call Haverhill death 'unexpected'

HAVERHILL — Local and state police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl that they are calling “unexpected.’’

The child was pronounced dead at Merrimack Valley Hospital around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, according to Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators are saying little about the death. Asked if foul play is suspected or whether the child died from an accident or a medical condition, Monahan refused to comment. She said the death was “unexpected.’’

She also refused to say whether criminal charges are likely to be filed.

Monahan refused to say what the cause of death was or how police found out about it.

“This is all we are releasing,” she said late last night.

The death is being investigated by state police detectives, Monahan said.

The Haverhill police department is also involved in the investigation, she said. Lt. Robert Pistone, spokesman for Haverhill police, did not return a telephone message left for him last night.
