Four children taken to hospital as Haverhill special needs van is rear-ended on Main Street

HAVERHILL — Four special needs students were taken to the hospital after the van they were riding in was rear-ended by another vehicle on Main Street.

The students, ranging from grades 1-5, were in a Haverhill Public Schools handicapped van on their way to Pentucket Lake Elementary School at around 8:40 a.m. when the driver, heading south, stopped for traffic at 6th Ave.

An Audi sedan struck the van from behind, causing minor damage to the rear bumper of the van.

As a precaution, the Haverhill Fire Department transported the four children to Merrimack Valley Hospital along with the bus monitor. Neither the monitor nor the driver were injured.

It is not know if charges will be filed by police against the Audi driver, as the accident was still under investigation this morning.

The children on the bus are not physically disabled, but are special needs students.
