METHUEN — The Methuen Sons of Italy will host their Run for the Vets 5K Road Race/Walk and 1K Walk for kids will be held on May 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Methuen Sons of Italy Lodge, 459 Merrimack St., Methuen.
This is the event’s 25th year. Funds raised will go to Veterans Northeast Outreach Center in Haverhill to help fund counseling for veterans, and to Merrimack Valley Hospice. The event honors our armed forces and veterans. All runners and walkers (including youth) may designate a person or persons on their application form that they wish to honor by their participation, and certificates are made up for them to keep or present to whomever they wish. As well as trophies and cash prizes for the first three male and female finishers in the 5K race, trophies will go to the first three male and female finishers who are veterans or active military personnel. There is a special awards category for any Sons of Italy member. A youth race for ages 5 to 14 will be held prior to the main race.
Register online at www.coolrunning.com. Runners and walkers can register from 7 a.m. to approximately 9:30 a.m. at the Lodge on the morning of the race. The youth races start at 8 a.m. and the walk for non-runners starts at 8:30 a.m. A homemade pasta meal follows the conclusion of the races. There will also be a raffle of prizes donated by various sponsors. A special discount on entry to both races that constitute the Memorial Weekend Challenge is available. Finish both the Sons of Italy 5K Race on May 24 and the Baldi 5 Mile River Run in Haverhill on May 25 and receive a special commemorative cup.
