HAVERHILL — The much-discussed move of the annual KidsFEST event to Kimball Farm will wait three more weeks.
The family event was scheduled for Sunday, but a forecast of rain will move the event to June 8, organizers said.
They said they decided to delay the festival more than a week to avoid a conflict with Memorial Day weekend.
“Our original rain date was set for Sunday, May 25th, and we have decided not to host the event on that date as it could conflict with Memorial Day cookouts, parties and vacations already planned by our anticipated audience,’’ Jennifer Cantwell, vice president of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, said in an email.
“In an effort to provide the most pleasurable and fun experience for our Greater Haverhill families and children, we will host the event on June 8th as we hope for better weather then,’’ the email said.
The chamber organizes KidsFEST each year to give local children and their families an event geared toward young people.
In past years, the festival has been in the downtown, most recently on the upper level of the Merrimack Street parking deck.
Chamber officials said they decided to move the event to the farm this year to give it a new venue and allow children to enjoy activities in a rural setting.
Concerns that some inner-city children and families will not have transportation to the farm have city officials discussing the possibility of buses to take them to the event. Kimball Farm is in Haverhill’s rural east end, several miles from downtown.
The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the farm, 791 East Broadway.Admission if free, but there is a $2 charge for parking. An ATM is on site. The festival will feature activities such as pony and wagon rides, petting zoos, carnival games and food, band performances, and arts and crafts.
