HAVERHILL — Police say a man suffered a leg injury yesterday when his motorcycle collided with a car outside a Haverhill restaurant.
Gary Mitchell, 57, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital shortly after 6 p.m., according to Sgt. Todd Smith.
The crash happened at the intersection of Locke and Orchard streets, near Butch’s Uptown Restaurant.
Beth Petrou, whose family owns the restaurant, said Mitchell landed at the restaurant’s front door after being thrown from his motorcycle. She said he was alert, but in pain due to an apparently severe leg injury.
Petrou said she often witnesses close calls outside the restaurant, usually when cars travel from Duncan Street to Orchard Street. She said she often sees cars cross traffic without slowing, which was the case when the car collided with Mitchell’s motorcycle yesterday.
“It’s dangerous if you just cut across the traffic because you can’t see if there’s anybody coming the other way, but it’s almost like it’s not their fault, because it doesn’t say to slow down, stop, yield or anything,” Petrou said.
Smith was not able to comment on the extent of the injury to Mitchell’s leg. No other injuries were reported.
The identity of the driver of the car was unavailable from police. They were unable to say whether charges will be filed because the investigation had just begun.
