Horgan Memorial Swim meet is Saturday

---- — Haverhill High School will host the second annual Michael J. Horgan Memorial Swim meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. Swimmers of all ages are invited to attend this fun, relay-based meet. Proceeds will go towards a scholarship awarded in Horgan’s name. Registration is at 1 p.m. The meet is at 2 p.m. Horgan, who died in March of 2011, was an active member of the New England swim community, including Haverhill High School, Bradford Swim club and the Summer Aquatic League for many years. Entries will be accepted on Saturday at the meet. All registered swimmers will receive long-sleeve commemorative T-shirts and bathing caps for a $25 registration fee, or $10 for 12 and under. Specator admission is a suggested donation of $10. New this year is the option of creating your own relay team. Participants and spectators can register online at mikehorganswimmeet.org.

Council on Aging Christmas/Holiday party tickets on sale

HAVERHILL — Tickets are now on sale for the Council on Aging’s annual Christmas/Holiday party. The event is Wednesday, Dec. 12, at DiBurro’s in Ward Hill. Doors open at 11 a.m. and party will start at 11:30 a.m. Tables of 10 can be reserved. Tickets, $10 for Haverhill residents and $15 for non-residents, can be purchased from Kathy Bresnahan or Rita LaBella at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. For more information call 978-374-2390.

Public library to host Book Chat session on Nov. 29

HAVERHILL — The public library will host a Book Chat session Nov. 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. This is an informal monthly reader’s advisory group where you can hear the latest fiction and non-fiction reviews and share what you are currently reading. Meet ‘Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig’

ATKINSON — There will be a day of ballet fun for budding dancers and story lovers Nov. 27, at 4:30 p.m. when ballerinas from the European School of Dancing take center stage at Kimball Library, 5 Academy Ave.

Author David Ira Rottenberg reads his picture book, “Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig,” while the dancers perform the story. As an added treat, a mini-movement lesson will be offered to the children in the audience after the performance and Rottenberg will sign copies of his book.

The event is free and cameras are encouraged.

Holiday trash pick-up

LAWRENCE — The trash pickup for the following areas will be pushed out one day due to the Thanksgiving holiday this Thursday:

Arlington area – Trash, Recycling and Yard Waste will be collected Friday.

Tower Hill area – Trash, Recycling and Yard Waste will be collected Saturday.

Thrift shop announces holiday season hours

HAMPSTEAD — The Hollyhock Thrift Shop will be closed on Saturday to give its all volunteer staff a rest over the long Thanksgiving weekend.

It will be open for its regular hours on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and Saturday, Dec. 1. The pre-holiday, half-price sale will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and run through Saturday, Dec. 18. The shop’s already low prices will be slashed in half for four days only: Dec. 4, 8, 11 and 18.

Following the sale, the shop will be closed for restocking until Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Meat raffle proceeds to help needy

PLAISTOW — The Plaistow Lions Club and Carl G. Davis Post 34 America Legion will be holding a Meat Raffle Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m.

The Meat Raffle will take place at the American Legion Carl G. Davis Post 34 at 176 Main St. Proceeds from the Meat Raffle will go to the Santa Fund to help those in need during the holidays.
