"Send help" scammer nets $1,700 from woman

ANDOVER — A Longwood Drive resident called police Thursday afternoon reporting that she had been scammed out of $1,700 she wired overseas, believing her chiropractor was in jail.

A scammer called the woman “and said her chiropractor is in jail in the Philippines,” Andover Police Lt. Harry Collins said.

The department tends to get calls about wiring money to help family members in some kind of hot water “five times a year, six times a year, that we know of,” Collins said. “This is just a different variation.”

“Somehow, they put it together and they got the woman’s chiropractor,” Collins said.

It isn’t known whether the $1,700, sent via Western Union, will be recovered.

“Any time someone calls saying they’re in trouble someplace, confirm it with another family member or somebody in the office, or just give us a call,” Collins said.
