---- — LAWRENCE - Criminals picked Sunday to prey on fitness buffs.

At least five people who entered a road race that ended at the Claddagh Pub on Canal Street had their cars broken into, according to police reports.

Police reported “multiple complaints” about car thefts from people who parked in the nearby Methuen Street area. Runners parked in the lots and the surrounding area for the race, according to a report filed by officer Eric Cerullo.

All of the vehicles had similar damage; Right side passenger windows were broken and items taken from inside the cars. Stolen were GPS units, cell phones and a purse that was left in plain sight. “The perpetrator(s) basically smashed the window and grabbed the items,” Cerullo wrote.

There are no witnesses or suspects, he added.

The cars broken into included a Toyota Camry, Honda Element, Cadillac Escalade and a Nissan Sentran

HAVERHILL — Police said a Lawrence man who they were unable to find during a roundup last week that resulted in the arrests of 11 people on various drug and weapons charges turned himself in on Friday. Police said Gabriel Diaz, 29, of Lawrence, walked into Haverhill District Court, where he arraigned on charges of distribution of heroin and a drug violation near a school or park, police said. Diaz was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail and must appear Dec. 27 for a pretrial hearing.

After complaints by neighbors about drug dealing in the Winter and White street area just north of downtown, Haverhill and state police, along with Boston ATF agents, conducted the operation last Thursday morning. The arrests were made about 6 a.m., and were conducted simultaneously by several arrest and entry teams who had warrants, police said. The 11 people who arrested in the roundup were arraigned that day and were ordered held on bail amounts ranging from $10,000 to $350,000.
