---- — HAVERHILL — Next week, local golfers will be able to help struggling families, while also having a chance to win some cool prizes.
It all happens at the 43rd annual Santa Fund Hole-in-One Contest at Garrison Golf Center on Hilldale Avenue.
The contest is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All money raised goes to The Haverhill Gazette Santa Fund, which distributes money through the Salvation Army and Haverhill Community Action. Money goes to families who otherwise could not afford to buy Christmas gifts for their children.
To participate, golfers pay $8 for a bucket of balls and drive them as close as they can to the hole, which is 150 yards away. Local businesses have donated gift certificates and other items as prizes.
Besides helping those families, participants have a chance to win golf equipment and other prizes, based on whose drives come closest to the hole.
Last year, the event raised $4,110 despite poor weather. Rain eliminated one day of the 2011 contest, but it still generated the same amount of money as it did the year before.
Garrison owners Ted and Mary Murphy have enlisted the help of student volunteers from local high schools to help run the event.
