Ryan, Toohey endorse Ciardiello for Governor's Council

Maura Ciardiello, Republican candidate for Governor’s Council, announced endorsements from her father, Haverhill City Councilor William Ryan, and Haverhill School Committee member and state Senate Candidate Shaun Toohey.

She plans to meet voters for “Coffee with Maura” events throughout the 5th District. Contact the Ciardiello Committee for dates and times at vote@mauraciardiello.com or visit her web site at www.mauraciardiello.com. Ciardiello is up against Democrat Eileen Duff of Gloucester for the seat.

Tierney and fellow Democrat decry Ryan budget

Congressman John Tierney joined Congressman Chris Van Hollen, D- Maryland, the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Budget Committee, to discuss what they call the devastating impact of the Ryan Budget, which Tierney’s opponent Richard Tisei has said is “a good start,” compared to the proposed Democratic budget.

In a conference call with reporters on Monday, Tierney and Van Hollen criticized the Ryan Budget for ending Medicare, protecting tax breaks for the wealthy while raising taxes on the middle class and rewarding companies that ship jobs overseas.

Van Hollen emphasized his support for Tierney and the need to reclaim a Democratic majority in Congress to stop the Tea Party Republican Plan. He highlighted Tierney’s record of fighting for middle class families and said Tierney is an important ally in passing a pro-jobs budget that will help grow our economy from the middle class out. Van Hollen warned that sending more Republicans like Tisei to Congress will enable them to pass what the Democrats called a radical agenda.

Tierney criticized Tisei for supporting the Ryan Budget and marching in lock-step with the Tea Party agenda.

“Seniors deserve a secure retirement and that’s why I will continue to fight against Republican efforts to privatize Medicare and Social Security,” Tierney said. “We need a federal budget that puts the middle class first and protects our seniors.’’
