Soles of Haverhill 2014 issues call for artists

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Team Haverhill’s public art project, the Soles of Haverhill is returning in the spring of 2014 with a new fiberglass shoe design featuring a cutout in the shoe to make room for a park-size bench allowing residents and visitors to interact with the whimsical fiberglass shoes.

The theme of this next event is “Soles of Haverhill 2014 – Fashion Forward.” Haverhill has a rich history that at one time revolved around worldwide fashion; hats, shoes, boots, buttons, textiles, and jewelry. This public art event is an opportunity to build on this history in a fun visual way with flair. Local and regional artists are invited to design imagery on a three-dimensional, 4-foot high by 6-foot long by 30-inch wide vintage shoe made of fiberglass.

There is an artist honorarium of $750 for each approved shoe design selected for exhibition.

Symbols, contemporary designs, and/or expressions of Haverhill’s shoe and fashion influences and the city’s history are encouraged. Artist selection is based on rendered descriptions, durability, uniqueness, originality and excellence.

Artists interested in participating in this event must submit an application to the Artist Selection Committee. An Artists Q & A will be held at the Artists Cafe, 22 Washington St., on Wednesday, July 17 at 6 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. Guidelines and applications are available at www.teamhaverhill.org.

Application deadline is Sept. 21. Artists will be selected by Sept. 28 and completed shoes are due the week of April 13, 2014. Team Haverhill is also seeking sponsors for these large eye-catching shoes.

For more information contact project co-chairs Leota Sarrette or Eric Karlstad at soles@teamhaverhill.org or 978-697-1648.
